What is periodontal disease At Calgary Dental Centers

At Calgary Dental Centers, our professionals take the time to educate patients on the variety of problems that can occur if oral health and wellness are not properly monitored. A common issue is the development of periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, often referred to as gum disease, is a truly preventable condition. The problem with periodontal disease is that it cannot be cured. The condition can negatively impact the health of the smile in a permanent way. Patients who have periodontal disease may notice:

  • Loss of bone and teeth
  • Bad breath (chronic halitosis)
  • Shrinking gum tissue
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bleeding when brushing and flossing

These are the symptoms of periodontal disease.

What treatments are offered for periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease can be addressed with a few different methods. In the earlier stages, patients benefit from a thorough cleaning in the dental office. This removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth and gums. If the periodontal disease has reached a later stage, it may be addressed with scaling and root planing. This is more aggressive approach to cleaning the mouth. In some instances, antibiotics may be prescribed or even applied directly to the gum tissue to control the infection. Controlling the infection is important in keeping the bacteria from entering other parts of the body through the bloodstream.
