Why should I choose metal-free composite resin fillings to treat tooth decay?

Finding a dentist who takes your oral health and wellness seriously is easy when you work with Dr. Hanif Asaria and his team at Calgary Dental Centers of Calgary, Alberta. When tooth decay, or cavities, develop, it is ideal that patients consider treatment options such as our metal-free composite resin fillings.

Metal Free Composite Fillings in Calgary AB Area

What is composite resin?

Composite resin is a mixture of plastic and glass particles, typically applied to teeth that have cavities or are otherwise structurally weakened. The material is highly durable and can be easily customized to match the color of surrounding teeth, making it an aesthetically pleasing option for fillings. Composite resin is also a metal-free filling solution, which means it is excellent for those who may be allergic to metal or are seeking a treatment that does not leave them exposed to mercury toxicity–as traditional silver amalgam fillings can.

What can I expect when getting a filling to treat tooth decay?

Our team helps to walk patients through the process so they know what to expect from start to finish. Once an area of decay has been diagnosed, our team will talk to the patient about the goals of composite resin dental fillings. Then, the decayed area is gently removed and prepared for the filling material. The composite resin material is applied to the tooth in layers, which are then moulded into shape and cured with a special light to harden it quickly. Once the resin is properly cured, the filling will be polished to ensure it looks natural and blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. Patients can leave the office with a brand-new smile, protected against further damage from tooth decay.

Do my composite fillings need to be replaced?

Ideally, we would love for every dental restoration to last a lifetime. However, the reality is that patients will need to have their dental fillings replaced if they come out. This is why our team encourages patients to visit for evaluations to check the health of the teeth and any dental restorations that have been placed over time. If our staff notices that a filling is becoming weaker or may come out, they may recommend removing and replacing the metal-free composite filling at a future appointment. These fillings can last several years before replacement may be needed, especially when patients properly care for their teeth with daily oral hygiene habits.
